“Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.” (Psalm 143:8 NIV)
In our modern lives, we are compelled to be organized to ensure we get everything done on time and efficiently. We may even go to bed with a well-planned list of things we want to accomplish the next day. We may be excited to go to a long-anticipated event tomorrow after a well-deserved night of rest. Despite all that preparation, the wise person always schedules some time early in the morning to check in with the Lord. He must be our very first priority each day.
The psalmist said he was excited to hear about God’s unfailing love each morning! Why? He placed his utmost trust in the Lord, and it was reassuring to hear each morning that God still loved him. Regardless of what happened yesterday or what may be anticipated, it is important to be reassured of God’s unfailing love!
Next, the wise sage asked God where to walk that day. As a person who was given, or submitted, to God, he did not want to be out of step with the rhythms of God’s grace in his life. Just consider how wise it is to ask God for direction before you take the next steps in your day. Timing is so important. The sequence of steps can make all the difference in the outcome of a challenge you must face. A phone call reaching someone at precisely the right moment can be a game-changer!
The wise writer of the following proverb knew these realities all too well:
“We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” (Proverbs 16:9 NLT)
Yes, I know your plans seem great in light of the information you have had at your disposal up until now. But what if the Lord knows something you did not know? What if a tragedy occurs when you have scheduled a meeting that morning? Wouldn’t you rather be open to God’s steps for your day than insist on your own? We can avoid much pain by simply being open to God’s guidance!
It is wise to seek out God’s directions for each day. He knows everything, and He knows the beginning from the end. We can avoid fruitless toil and labor as we engage in only those activities that garner God’s approval.

Action Steps:
Do you have God as your priority each morning? Do you meet with Him in a posture of prayer and readiness to receive His love and instructions?
If God knows everything about what will happen in your life on a given day, don’t you agree that it would be wise to ask Him for directions on how to proceed? Do you?
If seeking God first is not your daily practice, will you commit to doing the wise thing of consulting God before everyone else? It could save your life and prevent pain for you and others.
