How To Get A Handle On Our Emotions
Today, we’re focusing on something that we all experience but don’t always know how to handle—emotions. Emotions are a natural part of being human, but the Bible teaches us that, as Christians, we are not meant to be controlled by our emotions.
Instead, we are called to master them by surrendering them to God and allowing His Spirit to guide us. Mastering your emotions is a key part of living a life of peace and joy, regardless of what’s happening around you.
Understanding Emotions: A God-Given Gift
First, it’s important to understand that emotions are not inherently bad. God created us with the ability to feel deeply—whether it’s joy, sadness, anger, or love. Emotions can give us insight into our hearts and help us connect with others. However, when emotions are left unchecked, they can easily lead us away from God’s will.
Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) says:
"Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life."
This verse reminds us that our hearts and emotions need to be guarded and guided. While emotions are a gift from God, we must learn to manage them in a way that honors Him.
When we allow God to shape our emotions, they can lead us to love others well, respond with grace, and experience peace.
Using Prayer to Surrender Emotions to God
One of the most powerful ways to master your emotions is through prayer. When we bring our emotions—whether they’re positive or negative—to God, we are inviting Him to help us process and respond in a healthy, godly way. Through prayer, we can find peace in moments of anxiety, comfort in times of sadness, and self-control in times of anger.
Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT) reminds us:
"Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."
Prayer isn’t just about asking God to take away difficult emotions—it’s about asking Him to transform our hearts and give us His perspective. When we surrender our emotions to God, He gives us the peace and strength to handle whatever comes our way.
May the Lord bless you today!
